Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
What Is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike lasers (which use a single wavelength), IPL uses a broadband light source with multiple wavelengths (usually 500–1200 nm). Filters are used to target specific chromophores like:
- Melanin (for hair removal or pigmentation)
- Hemoglobin (for vascular treatments)
- Water (for collagen stimulation)
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a popular light-based skin treatment often confused with laser treatments, but it’s technically not a laser. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light to target multiple skin concerns, including hair removal, pigmentation, and vascular lesions.
How IPL Works
- A handheld device emits brief flashes of intense light.
- The light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by pigment or blood vessels.
- Heat destroys the target without harming surrounding tissue.
- The body clears the damaged pigment or hair follicle over time.
